Career Tools: A Checklist to Create a Winning CV

Sooner or later, each of us is faced with the need to write a CV. It is not enough to simply put your experience on paper and list all the skills. After all, a resume is your business card, which can both increase your chances of successful employment and reduce them to zero.

When writing a resume, you can use specialized CV builders. Now we are working on a CV builder for GSB students - stay tuned.

Also, for a more detailed study, you can sign up for a career coaching with a specialist from the Career Centre and receive personal recommendations.

For now, you can study the checklist developed by our Centre and make the CV writing process as efficient as possible.

Stage 1: Getting ready

  • STEP 1: Define the purpose of your resume

To begin with, it is especially important to determine what kind of position you want to get by submitting a resume. Write down a few roles that interest you.

  • STEP 2: Conduct a mini market research

Now you need to understand in which companies you can find job adverts for the chosen positions. To do this, write down the list of companies you have heard about that seem to be attractive employers for you. Go to the sites of these companies, to their social networks, to their pages on job search sites. It is important to determine if these employers have vacant positions that are of interest to you. Another way is to find people whose careers seem interesting to you in professional social networks (such as LinkedIn, Facebook). Find out the positions they started from; mark the companies they grew up from.

  • STEP 3: Make sure your education and experience are relevant to the position

We recommend writing a tailored resume for each position. Think over and write down how your experience may be of interest to the employer. If there is no work experience yet, focus on academic courses relevant to the new role or additional activities (courses, cases) corresponding to the desired position.

Stage 2: Writing a Resume

  • STEP 1: Make out the resume header

Indicate your name, your phone number, your e-mail address, the city of residence. If you are looking for job while studying, be sure to indicate the type of employment and the number of hours you are willing to devote to work.

You can add your photo to the top of the CV. Please note that it should be in a business style. If you do not have one, then leave your CV without it.

  • STEP 2: Write down the purpose of the resume

For this stage, we just carried out preliminary preparation. The goal should be spelled out briefly, but succinctly. For example, applying for a business analyst position in Market Research Department of X Company.

  • STEP 3: List your work experience

If you already have work experience, indicate it in reverse chronological order. Include dates of employment, name of the company, department, job title/position and a brief description of your responsibilities that are most relevant to the requirements for the chosen position. We also recommend indicating your achievements in each job (if any). If you have been promoted while building your career path, be sure to indicate this.

  • STEP 4: Provide information on your education

Indicate the year of graduation from the university, the name of the university, faculty, and your degree. Also, especially if you apply for entry-level jobs, indicate the courses that are most relevant to the new role. If you have taken any additional courses or trainings, you can also indicate them in this section.

  • STEP 5: Add information about extracurricular activities

This step is relevant for students and graduates who do not yet have work experience. Have you participated in case championships? Have you completed additional educational programs? Were you a volunteer? Add this information to the "Additional Activities" section so the employer will note that, in addition to studying, you have invested in self-development.

  • STEP 6: Write down additional information and personal qualities

It is worth mentioning the level of language skills, software skills and other skills related to your future position. You can also specify your personal qualities. It is not necessary to add the well-known "responsible, proactive, etc." according to the template. Think about the key qualities you possess the most and add them to your CV.

Stage 3: CV Review

  • STEP 1: Brevity is the soul of wit.

Make sure your resume is clear and structured, it should not contain unnecessary information. Ideally it should be one page in length for students and graduates with no work experience, it can take up to two pages for professionals.

  • STEP 2: Check the resume for Grammar and Spelling

The resume should not contain errors or typos, if it does the chances to be invited to an interview immediately reduce to zero.

  • STEP 3: Show the resume to your friends

Show the resume to friends whose opinion is important to you. Based on their comments, you can edit the resume, making it even more professional.

Congratulations!

Your CV is ready. Now you can apply for a job.
